Planning Secretary. The Town of Alton is accepting resumes for the position of a Secretary. This position reports to the Town Planner and works in the Planning Department at the Town Hall located at 1 Monument Square in Alton.

Duties and responsibilities include receiving incoming inquiries for the Town Planner, and the Planning Board, Zoning Board of Adjustment, and their Committees’. Works with the public in assisting, as necessary, with completion of application packets, answering standard inquiries regarding records, plans, regulations, and process and filing requirements. The position also includes other responsibilities such as acting as receptionist and resource to residents with guidance and general assistance, answering requests for information and refers communication to proper authorities or departments, working with developers, contractors, property owners and other members of the public when explaining statutes, rules, regulations, codes and ordinances and knows when to refer questions to the Town Planner.

Recommended requirements for the ideal candidate include the ability to understand local development ordinances and regulations, to become familiar with state laws regarding planning and zoning, and to read tax maps and site plans/subdivision plans, and to apply knowledge to review of application packets; Ability to explain complicated rules and regulations, procedures and deadlines to a wide variety of customers at the counter and by email and phone; Microsoft Office knowledge and experience is required. A standard knowledge and experience with office equipment operations. Any equivalent combination of education and experience, which demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered.

Qualities include proficiency, responsibility, organization, attention to detail, good work ethic, positive attitude, an understanding of and compliance with confidentiality, trustworthiness, team player, excellent written and verbal communications, courtesy, and attention to a variety of complex financial and administrative tasks.

The position is full-time at 40 hours per week. Overtime is rare and only on an as-needed basis. The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00am – 4:30pm. Attendance at monthly Planning Board meetings is required. A flex schedule will occur during the week a meeting takes place. Additional meetings may be required. The position includes a competitive benefit package. Applicants must pass a full background check upon or prior to a conditional offer of employment. Starting hourly rate is $16.36, but may be flexible dependent upon prior municipal experience.
